What is Collagen? …why and when do we need it?

Collagen is our body’s super protein and is the major structural component of our skin!! It is naturally occurring and one the most abundant in the human body. Although more often talked about for promoting hair, teeth, skin and nails health, collagen is found in muscles, bones, tendons, blood vessels and the digestive system. So collagen is what helps give skin its strength and elasticity, along with replacing dead skin cells.  And when it comes to joints and tendons, it serves as the ‘glue’ that holds the body together, preventing the decline of its internal and external integrity.

The downside is that the body’s collagen production naturally begins to slow down, normally as early as age 25, causing many signs associated with ageing, such as wrinkles, sagging skin and joint pain. However, as collagen is metabolised by the body’s cells, it is a degenerative process that can be reversed by taking regular oral supplements, such as Ellactiva’s Collagen & soft chews which contain Bioactive Collagen Peptides®.

Bioactive Collagen Peptides® can stimulate skin metabolism and counteract the loss of collagenous extracellular matrix from the inside. Those who ingest the natural Bioactive Collagen Peptides® orally can experience noticeably firmer and smoother skin with fewer wrinkles. The positive effect of Bioactive Collagen Peptides® also shows in an improved skin surface structure, reducing cellulite and a faster nail growth with reportedly less chipping of fingernails.

Several scientific studies investigated the potential of Bioactive Collagen Peptides® with results that found:

  • Higher skin elasticity (1)
  • Reduction of wrinkles (2)
  • Improved skin surface structure and decrease of cellulite (3)
  • Promoting growth and health of fingernails (4)
